Gretel & hansel csfd. Gretel & hansel review. Gretel & 26 hansel and gretel. Gretel & hansel tropes. A stylish, chilling retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Fairy tales have always been pretty scary — that was the whole point, back when the Brothers Grimm compiled folktales from the oral traditions of rural Germany. Many of the stories have brutal, sad endings, and many, if not all, were intended to teach their target audience — children — a very important lesson: Never go into the wilderness alone. Gretel & Hansel, a modern retelling of "Hansel and Gretel" from director Oz Perkins released in theaters back in January and now available to rent on VOD, reaches back in time to find its source material"s terrifying roots. In the original story, little Gretel and Hansel stumble upon a house made out of cakes and candies while walking in the woods that is owned by a witch who hopes to roast the siblings alive and eat them. The movie slyly inverts the story. Gretel (played by IT "s Sophia Lillis) and brother Hansel (Samuel J. Leakey), thrown out of their home by their mother after her daughter refuses to work for a creepy man who"d asked her if she"s still a virgin, travel through the woods and are saved by a hunter (Charles Babalola), who tells them there"s employment to be found with the woodcutters up the road. But Gretel has learned to be suspicious of adult men who come along just when you need them and leads her brother back through the woods until they find a house full of food. The witch who lives inside (Alice Krige) lets Hansel practice chopping trees with an axe while she teaches magic to Gretel, awakens a primordial power within the girl, and tempts her with promises of a life free of men, adults and the bindings of society. But everything given requires something to be taken away, and Gretel soon learns the terrifying origins of the witch"s magic, and what she had to give up to possess it. The movie is a refreshingly feminine take on fairy-tale mythology, examining female power while also cautioning against the lengths one might need to go to in order to acquire it. Gretel & Hansel has a striking look, in keeping with Perkins" usual directorial flair. Many characters wear clothing with exaggerated shapes, have jagged collars, and don pointy little hats, and the sets often have a German expressionist tendency to tilt in odd directions, with nonexistent ceilings and walls that seem to go up and up forever. Galo Olivares (the cinematography collaborator on Netflix"s Roma) shot most of the movie in an unexpected, claustrophobic 1:55:1 aspect ratio, while every scene is lit with evocative primary colors, most often a bright, sickly yellow. The movie is a treat to look at, especially the gorier moments, even if you eventually find the plot lacking. With its antique setting, Gretel & Hansel fits right into the recent "provincial horror" movement, in the vein of other scary movies like The Witch and Apostle, of precarious, outmoded village societal mores crumbling from within. Gretel (you may have noticed her name appears first) is a 21st-century character dropped into an 18th-century world, a lens by which we can look back and reshape the stories of the past to reflect the aspirations of the present. Movies | ‘Gretel & Hansel’ Review: Brother’s Keeper In this eerie yet underdeveloped take on the well-known fairy tale, two siblings find food and sorcery deep in the woods. Credit... Orion Pictures Gretel & Hansel Directed by Oz Perkins Fantasy, Horror, Thriller PG-13 1h 27m The director Osgood Perkins specializes in not-quite-horror movies: eerie, patient, female-centric tales that hint at far more than they reveal. In “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House” (2016), he teased a standard haunting into a conversation between life and death. And with the more bloody “Blackcoat’s Daughter” (released in the U. S. in 2017), he used shifting timelines and an isolated girls’ boarding school to examine grief and abandonment. “Gretel & Hansel” finds him relying once again on atmosphere over narrative. Flipping the title of the well-known fairy tale, he sends the two siblings (confidently played by Sophia Lillis and Sammy Leakey) into the deep, dark woods. Famine and disease have ravaged the countryside, and the children’s distraught mother, unable to feed them, has cast them out to fend for themselves. A friendly hunter (Charles Babalola) warns them not to talk to wolves, however seductive; but it’s their human counterparts who are more to be feared. “Are you intact?, ” a leering nobleman asks the teenage Gretel in response to her pleas for a housekeeper position. And when, starving, the two are enticed into the suspiciously food-filled cottage of an old crone (an unsettling Alice Krige), the vile secret behind her abundant vittles might put you off your own. Essentially the story of a young woman coming into her power, “Gretel & Hansel” is quietly sinister, yet too underdeveloped to truly scare. Together, Jeremy Reed’s production design and Galo Olivares’s photography weave a chilly spell that’s regrettably undermined by the opacity of the storytelling. Like our two babes in the wood, the movie needs a bit more meat on its bones. Gretel & Hansel Rated PG-13 for bloody offal and sickening sweets. Running time: 1 hour 27 minutes.

Gretel & hansel مترجم. Aside from the odd Oscar contender expanding into wide release, January is not known as a fertile period for film releases, and in particular, the schlocky January horror film has practically become its own genre by now. So perhaps the best one can say about “ Gretel & Hansel, ” Oz Perkins’ revision of the Brothers Grimm tale, is that it is absolutely not a typical January horror movie. More ominous than exciting, more bleak than violent, and inspired more by Robert Eggers and Dario Argento than anything in the Hammer and Blumhouse canons, “Gretel & Hansel” is a stylish, impressive-looking attempt to bring some arthouse horror sensibilities to the multiplex, under cover of a PG-13 fairy tale riff. It’s not entirely successful at doing so – in fact, it’s often kind of a mess, especially when it comes to the inexplicable revelations of its third act – but at least credit the filmmakers for having higher ambitions than the film’s release schedule would indicate. With “It’s” Sophia Lillis in the lead role, “Gretel & Hansel” has switched the order of those titular names for a reason. In this version, Gretel is a diaphanous, wise-eyed 16-year-old, and her brother Hansel (Sammy Leakey) is a cute but helpless eight-year-old whom she’s been tasked with protecting. Set in a geographically unspecified storybook realm – British accents, like modern idioms, cycle in and out of usage – these two have been left to fend for themselves after their father dies and their mother slips into a deprivation-related madness, ordering her children off to the woods. (“Dig yourselves some pretty little graves, and dig one for your mother too, ” she offers as valedictory advice. ) The two siblings find the wider world wildly unforgiving: Gretel’s reptilian potential employer at an inn asks if she’s “kept her maidenhood, ” and a quick night’s sleep in an abandoned home leads to an attack and a chase from a zombielike ghoul. (This latter scene – like Lillis’ sometimes intrusive voice-over narration – feels like it must have been added late in the development process, as it’s the only time the film will indulge in straight B-movie action and jump scares. ) Saved by a kindly huntsman (Charles Babalola), the two children are directed toward a distant convent, far off into the woods. Lillis plays Gretel with a hushed intensity, letting her words and her gaze trail off in unexpected directions, and it’s quickly suggested that she possesses some sort of second-sight, experiencing vivid dreams and premonitions of hooded figures stalking the thick, foggy forest around them. After much wandering, complaints of hunger, and a shared psychedelic experience after eating some mushrooms, the two children come upon a surprisingly modern A-frame house in a clearing: inside, a giant banquet has been left out for no one in particular. Living here is the mysterious Holda (a delightfully creepy Alice Krige). A sharp-tongued, elderly crafter of various cold-pressed juices, she regards Hansel with obvious intentions – sniffing his hair and practically licking her lips as she encourages him to eat more and more – and Gretel with much more nebulous ones. The two stay there for longer and longer, continuing to enjoy Holda’s mysterious bounty, as Gretel’s dreams turn ever more menacing, and Holda starts to worm her way under Gretel’s skin. Mostly devoid of humor aside from one very surprising one-liner at a climactic moment (you’ll know it when you see it), the film, scripted by Rob Hayes, has some genuinely promising ideas in mind, at times prodding around the edges of a full-on feminist re-imagining of the fairy tale witch. But it never manages to reconcile its deeper interests with the need to hit some of the more obvious genre paces. The film certainly looks nice, with a wealth of eye-catching compositions: the camera always finds the most disorienting possible perspective as the two children pass through the forest; cinematographer Galo Olivares imbues Holda’s house with an amber glow that is simultaneously warm and sickly; composer Rob’s score leans heavily on Goblin-style synths; and production designer Jeremy Reed splits the difference between the antique and the modern with effectively unsettling results. The problem is that so many of its virtues feel compromised. At 87 minutes, it feels either too long or too short, returning to its more ominous imagery often enough that the impact starts to dull, but never properly digging into some of the richer veins it begins to tap. Even considering the source material, it is at times almost overwhelmingly grim – though it doesn’t contain much in the way of upfront gore or violence, the fact that this film skated by with a PG-13 rating while the likes of “Marriage Story” and “Rocketman” were recently saddled with an R should give critics of MPAA standards much to discuss – which only makes its pulled punches in the finale more obvious and unsatisfying. And for all of the care that went into its look and its sound, the world of the film never feels more than halfway formed; in the rush to tie up its narrative loose ends, it leaves its more intriguing thematic ones hanging.

Gretel & hansel movie review. During this past month, the horror genre has taken it especially hard on the chin with the release of such instantly and intensely forgettable duds as “The Grudge, ” “ Underwater ” and “ The Turning, ” a trio of films that collectively failed to inspire the same amount of raw terror found in the trailer for that “ Peter Rabbit ” sequel. Therefore, people might understandably look at “Gretel & Hansel, ” a film being dropped into theaters with little advance word and on Super Bowl weekend to boot, and assume that it"s just another movie destined to come and go from the multiplex in net-record time. In reality, this is the kind of low-key gem that horror fans are always looking for but so rarely find—one that is smartly conceived, visually stylish and genuinely creepy at times. As one might surmise from the arrangement of the names in the title, the focus of this version of perhaps the grimmest of all the Grimm fairy tales is on Gretel ( Sophia Lillis), who is depicted here as several years older than brother Hansel ( Samuel Leakey)—old enough so that when she goes out to seek work to provide for herself, Hansel, and their insane mother, her lecherous prospective employer inquires as to whether she has “kept her maidenhood. ” Needless to say, that opportunity goes sour and Gretel’s troubles are compounded when her mother kicks her and her brother out to fend for themselves. (“Dig yourself some pretty little graves. ”) They spend one night with a kindly woodsman ( Charles Babalola) who gives them food, directions, and sage advice but the journey is long and arduous, lightened only by a brief respite when they consume some wild mushrooms with certain unexpected qualities. Just when all seems lost for the two, they stumble upon a house in the middle of nowhere and spy a lavish and seemingly unattended feast sitting on the table just waiting for someone to eat. This is the home of Holda ( Alice Krige), a strange older woman who invites the two in to eat and take refuge. While Hansel is more concerned with filling his belly to notice anything else, even when his host appears to be sniffing his hair, Gretel picks up right from the start that strange things are afoot. The house seems way bigger on the inside than logic should dictate. The enormous spread of food never seems to abate despite the lack of any garden or livestock on or around the premises. And while Gretel has always odd dreams and premonitions, they take on a decidedly darker turn the longer that they stay with Holda. You probably think you know where this is going from here. You may not be correct in your assumptions. “Gretel & Hansel” is the third film from director Osgood Perkins, whose previous efforts included “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” and “ I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. ” Neither of those movies quite worked for me, I admit, but they did do enough to suggest that he was an intriguing new directorial voice who was clearly on the cusp of doing something really interesting once he got a hold of the right material. With this film, he has done that and the results are often startlingly good. The screenplay by Rob Hayes takes the familiar narrative and finds a fresh approach, leaning towards a feminist take on the tale that may not exactly be subtle at times (her symbolic passage from childhood to womanhood is prefigured by the appearance of a long wooden staff and a vat of mysterious viscous goo that is perhaps the most over-the-top touch in the otherwise subdued story) but it does offer up an audacious and often surprising slant to the proceedings. As much as it is a horror story, this perspective allows the film to also work as a thoughtful coming-of-age tale of a young woman gradually realizing that she does have power after all, and can use it to make a path into the world that is entirely of her own design. Many of the other elements of the film click in unexpectedly rewarding ways as well. Visually, the film is a constant knockout as Perkins and cinematographer Galo Olivares lend it a hypnotic and stylishly moody look that makes it feel at times like a lost work from Italian horror maestro Mario Bava, a sensation helped by the inspired production design by Jeremy Reed. The synth-heavy score by composer Robin Coudert adds an extra layer of Goblin-like unease to the proceedings that is also enormously effective. The performances by the three lead actors are strong and sure, all the more so because they all commit to their roles and never come across as though they are goofing on the material. (Although there are a couple of dark laughs here and there, the film is refreshingly straight-faced for the most part. ) As for the hardcore genre buffs wondering how effectively scary a PG-13 horror film can be will be happy to know that Perkins creates a strong aura of unease that never lets up and only once devolves into anything resembling a cheap “BOO! ” moment. My only real problem with “Gretel & Hansel” is that it contains an intermittent voiceover from Gretel that feels as if it was added at the last second in order to overtly explain things that could have been easily and more effectively left unsaid. That said, with its offbeat narrative and emphasis on moodiness over ham-handed shocks, this is the kind of genre film that is probably a better fit for arthouses than multiplexes—it will almost certainly join “ Color Out of Space ” as one of the first new cult favorites of the new decade—and those who go to it expect the usual nonsense may find themselves put off by its quieter and more ultimately unsettling approach. Those in the mood for something that is off the beaten path, on the other hand, should make a beeline to catch it while you can.
